Wilderness & Expedition Training

Wilderness and expedition training has always been at the heart of CIE.  Having been involved in a number of developing-country expeditions in which various situations required the intervention of an appropriately qualified medic, we have come to realise that no classroom or textbook-based course can adequately prepare expedition members for the potential pitfalls of remote travel.

Unlike workplace-based first aid, wilderness training is essentially unregulated and can be offered by anyone wishing to do so.  Educators adhering to an ethos of good practice should, at the very least, follow the guidelines of the Wilderness Medical Society, recognised as being the leader in wilderness-related medical research and training.

Our courses are based around practical hands-on training using currently available equipment. Once mastered, the emphasis changes to improvising an equivalent level of treatment from readily available resources. We believe it is easier to improvise once you appreciate what it is your treatment is supposed to achieve.
